Overview

Often compared to San Francisco for its hillside location and spectacular bay views, Haifa is an attractive city on Israel's quiet north coast. Traditionally considered a blue collar city, Haifa is rebranding itself as a high-tech town, and with the new money has come a slew of posh restaurants, boutiques and five-star hotels. For visitors, the obvious highlight is the Baha'i Gardens, an unmissable splash of well-tended green that cascades down the mountain. This is the center of the Baha'i religion and an important place of pilgrimage for the followers of this faith. From Haifa, it's possible to make some great day trips around Israel's north coast. South of Haifa is the extraordinary archaeological site of Caesarea, King Herod's great pleasure palace. Strait across Haifa Bay is the ancient city of Akko, a timeless place that played host to Marco Polo some 750 years ago. Farther north, right at the Lebanese border, are the spectacular cave grottos of Rosh HaNikra, which can be reached by a suspended cable car. For a great drive along country roads, travel inland to Peqi'in, a shady village inhabited mainly by the Druze minority. The town is famous for its traditional Levantine foods.
