There can be few better experiences in Rajasthan than getting lost in the city's backstreets. To appreciate this rare Indian beauty, take a boat ride to Jagmandir Island, the site of a palace that is said to have been an inspiration for the Taj Mahal, and drink in the views across the twinkling waters to the city and its glorious palaces. The city is also known for its cultural pursuits — the performing arts, crafts and paintings are all standouts. Perhaps the best time to be in Udaipur is during the Mewar Festival in March or April, when the local women dress up in their finest clothes.
