To preserve the island's natural splendor, Thailand's national parks service established Ko Ra-Ko Phra Thong National Park in 2001. Ko Phra Thong often serves as a jumping off point for excursions to Surin National Park, which is popular with scuba divers. On Ko Phra Thong, a range of budget and luxury accommodations are available, and the island's three local villages are populated by a mix of native Thais and sea gypsies. Ko Phra Thong forms part of a three-island chain in the Andaman Sea.
