At just 11 miles wide, Antigua is a small island, but with its colonial history, superb water sports and lovely Britishisms like cricket and Pimms on ice, Antigua makes a perfect beach vacation. Nelson's Dockyard, a colonial-era naval base turned primo tourist attraction, combines gorgeous Georgian architecture, shopping and wonderful strolling alongside English Harbor. Be sure to check out Shirley Heights, an old fort with stunning views and an interpretive center that explains the island's history. To get a look at inner Antigua, rent a 4WD and cruise up Fig Tree Drive, which climbs up through lush banana plantations and explores rural island life. Seaside resorts are plentiful, as are beach bars that are stocked with plenty of cold beer. Neighboring tiny Barbuda is worthwhile for a visit to the Codrington Lagoon. This estuary is the mating and nesting grounds for thousands of frigate birds.
