Overview

These three small islands off the northern coast of Honduras offer some of the finest scuba diving and snorkeling in the world. Fishing is spectacular as well, from the flats to the reefs to offshore trolling. Most of the locals are of Creole descent, and speak English, so the feel is more Caribbean than Central American. Fishing is spectacular as well, from the flats to the reefs to offshore trolling. Most of the locals are of Creole descent, and speak English, so the feel is more Caribbean than Central American. Ten years ago this region was unknown to all but hard-core divers — today it is Honduras's most popular tourist destination. You can fly to the small airport on Roatan, or take a ferry from La Ceiba on the mainland. Roatan is the largest island, and offers by far the most lodging and dining options, with a nice range from budget guest houses to first-class resorts. Almost all are beachfront. Several cruise ships visit each week. The nightlife is hopping, and the beach scene is lively. The two smaller islands have, if anything, even better diving sites to offer. Guanaja has no roads — you get around by boat. Most visitors are divers on weeklong tours. Utila is a famous counterculture destination — dreadlocks and drum circles. It's also the place to dive with whale sharks, and perhaps the cheapest place in the world to earn your dive certification.
