Overview

The baroquely beautiful old town of Salzburg nestled beneath steep hills looks almost the same as it did when former resident Mozart walked the streets here about 250 years ago. The baroquely beautiful old town of Salzburg nestled beneath steep hills looks almost the same as it did when former resident Mozart walked the streets here about 250 years ago. Austria's second most loved tourist attraction (after Vienna) features larger than life 17th century structures still silhouetting lovely landscaped grounds encircling the elegant gardens of the Schloss Mirabell — Austrian German for formal gardens — which are ablaze with color in the summer months. After sunset, the medieval Hohensalzburg (castle fortress) lingers brilliantly within an illuminated arc of lights above the city and makes a wonderful after dinner photo op. During the day, discover a labyrinth of fountains, squares, bridges, courtyards, and cathedrals while wandering the city's elaborate maze of constricted, stone-paved lanes. In summer, the mountains and valleys around town are alive with The Sound of Music, and travelers can discover the sights made famous by the Julie Andrews movie musical. The pedestrian-only old section of the city rests snugly on the south bank of the Salzach River. Numerous sightseeing attractions and the stylish shopping boulevard of Getreidegasse are accessible from this area. Look here for Mozart's residence (Wohnhaus) and birthplace (Geburtshaus), along with the Schloss Mirabell.
