Nowhere else in the world can skiers and riders find so much interconnected terrain as in this set of resorts, first explored and designed in 1925 by an expedition led by Arnold Lunn, inventor of the slalom. Fifteen hundred ski instructors assure that skiing is available for all levels of skiers, and make the region as popular with families as it is with world-class ski pros. Its 335 runs (of which 183 are easy, 119 intermediate and 33 rated difficult) range from a base elevation of 4,265 feet to a top elevation of 10,597 feet. The longest is the three-mile Cîme de Caron. The 183 lifts include 3 cable cars, 37 gondolas, 69 chair lifts and 74 surface lifts. Along with the downhill skiing are 75 miles of cross-country ski trails, and an Olympic ice area for skating and hockey. Life off the slopes is just as varied, with resort villages filled with smart shops, a total of nine Michelin-starred restaurants, and a lively après-ski and nightlife scene.
