All-time legendary Olympian Jean-Claude Killy learned to ski in Val d’Isère, and this resort in the French Alps is still the place of skiers’ dreams. The skiing area of this town and its newer partner resort of Tignes is called Espace Killy and together they offer skiing and winter sports for every skill level and taste. As they are quick to point out, these resorts offer skiing before and after everyone else, opening some sections in mid-October and re-opening for a summer ski season beginning in mid-June. Although Val d'Isère has hosted Winter Olympics and World Alpine Ski Championships, there’s plenty of terrain here and at Tignes for all skills and ages, with 185 miles of slopes and trails, free-ride itineraries and a snowpark. Snow quality is among the best, due to altitudes ranging between 5,085 and 11,318 feet.

The range of non-ski winter outdoor activities is impressive, too. Guided snowshoe and dogsled excursions explore the alpine environment, ice diving provides a look at the wonderland beneath the frozen surface of Lac de Tignes, paraskiing harnesses the wind for mountaintop thrills, and paragliding provides unparalleled views of the snow-covered Alps. Expect all the indoor pleasures of an Alpine village: fine dining, a varied après-ski scene, spas and indoor sports.
