At the border between Normandy and Brittany, the massive walls of Mont-St-Michel enclose one of the greatest sightseeing attractions in Europe. Seen for miles around, "The Rock" rises 260 feet (79 m) high, crowning a rocky islet. A causeway links the granite hilltop to the mainland. A Benedictine monastery was founded on this spot in 966 by Richard I, Duke of Normandy. It was destroyed by fire in 1203 but rebuilt. One of the most significant Gothic masterpieces in Europe, the "Merveille" (Marvel) is enclosed by ramparts. Normandy contains a wealth of other destinations, especially its capital at Rouen, home site of one of the world's greatest Gothic cathedrals. The cathedral was immortalized by Monet in a series of Impressionistic paintings. Other Norman highlights include the D-Day Beaches (best center: Arromanches-les-Bains) where "The Longest Day" began in the pre-dawn hours of June 6, 1944. Regal Deauville, retreat of the rich and famous, is the most expensive and chicest beach resort in France. Finally, Bayeux merits a stopover, as it is known for its cathedral from 1077 and for its Bayeux Tapestry.
