Naples gives the visitor a wonderful taste of southern Italian passion and history. From the famed Neopolitan pizza, to local music, desserts and markets, Naples displays its regional flavor with a flourish. Naples could also be considered as an archaeological center of Italy (and the world) with its notable National Archeological Museum, the city underground tours, and nearby Pompeii. The Palazzo Reale shows off Renaissance-era art and architecture, while the Duomo, Gesu Nuovo and Santa Chiara Cloister and the nearby Certosa di San Martino monestary reveals Naples' sacred side. To experience the passion of modern Naples, seek out the morning market of Mercato di Porta Nolana, dine at the seaside Borgo Marinaro, or just sit and have some wine with the locals. Outside of Naples, the formerly volcanic ash-entombed ruins of Pompeii and Heculaneum are among the wonders of the world, almost perfectly preserved examples of Roman towns from nearly two thousand years ago. Intrepid hikers can climb still-active Mt. Vesuvius to see the steaming crater and get a panoramic view of its historical paths of destruction.
