Riding a vaporetto through the Grand Canal between old villas adorned with gilded architectural features is an unforgettable experience. Take a longer ride to Venice's islands to see colorful neighborhoods and artisan shops. Climb St. Mark's Tower for a panoramic view of the city, then see the glory of the Venetian empire in the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale. Take a wander through the winding streets and public gardens, then enjoy a coffee at one of Venice's many sidewalk cafes followed by some cicchetti tapas-style snacks.

Surprisingly, Venice is also home to one of the world's great modern art museums in the Guggenheim, which provides a nice contrast to the classic Venetian art of the Gallerie dell'Accademia. Venice has all sorts of entertainment options highlighted by the annual Carnevale festival, and regular opera, theater and dance performances at the reconstructed Teatro la Fenice.
