Boasting Europe's largest, most beautiful, and most perfectly preserved World Heritage-listed Baroque old town, the little-visited Lithuanian capital of Vilnius is the Baltic's hidden gem. With a splendid skyline of elegant spires reminiscent of Budapest's, Vilnius's lavish churches are the city's highlight, from the breathtaking interiors of Sts. The city is also home to Vilnius University, Eastern Europe's oldest, and its myriad courtyards, linked by spooky passages, are fun to explore. Equally as enjoyable is strolling the Old Town's cobblestone streets, including lively Pilies Gatve, lined with amber and craft shops and cozy eateries serving up hearty Lithuanian cuisine. Don't miss tucking into a plate of "zeppelin," enormous potato dumplings stuffed with cheese, meat or mushrooms. However, after that you'll have to walk off the calories with a hike up elegant Didzioji Gatve to see the sublime and sacred Gates of Dawn.
