Home to one of Canada’s top universities, the city has a distinct British feel with its wide leafy streets and abundance of expansive parks. Towering over downtown, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is a prominent landmark and a superb example of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture. There is a strong cultural pulse to this arts-loving city, with festivals ranging from literary to jazz to the visual arts. Guelph also provides a great base for exploring the bucolic charms of surrounding Wellington County, beloved for its historic towns and villages, hiking and biking trails galore, and for the endless opportunities to experience the charm – and cuisine – of rural Ontario. One of the best places to sample the region’s fresh produce, and to view the work of local artisans, is at the weekly Guelph Farmers’ Market.
