Overview

On the south bank of the St. Lawrence River, hilly Rivière-du Loup has a pleasantly prosperous feel to it – enhanced by eight waterfalls, the largest with a drop of some 30 meters (close to 100 feet). The town’s prosperity dates to the growing timber industry and the new railway line, back in the mid 1800s. The best way to explore is on foot, particularly neighborhoods such as St. Patrice with its collection of old and opulent summer homes. Guided tours through houses such as La Maison Louis-Bertrand and Manoir Fraser provide a vivid picture of the life and times of 19th-century Rivière-du-Loup. Today, the town is a base for whale-watching cruises – mainly for belugas who come to breed in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Saguenay River, which opens into the north shore of the St. Lawrence. Other boat tours transport visitors to explore and learn about the marine environment of some of the river’s numerous islands, while parks and shoreline trails offer ample opportunities for bird watching, cycling and hiking.
