Overview

The ever more developed southern end of the Baja California peninsula is known as Los Cabos. The ever more developed southern end of the Baja California peninsula is known as Los Cabos. The town of San José del Cabo stands at the eastern end of the Los Cabos Corridor and is the tranquil, relaxing end of the Los Cabos spectrum. Founded as a Jesuit mission in 1730, it still retains a measure of old Spanish ambience with its old houses and plazas shaded by ancient trees. Local campaigners even managed to squash plans for a large marina here on environmental grounds. San José is a superb place to simply enjoy great beaches - as lazily as you like or more actively with a surfboard at great local breaks such as Zipper's or with a snorkel at Playa Santa María. In town, shady Plaza Mijares, with its reconstructed mission church, is at the heart of the older center. Boulevard Mijares runs from here to the beachfront Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) with its larger hotels. Interesting shops abound, and there's a wildlife refuge along the Arroyo San José between the center and the Zona Hotelera.
