Saratoga's obvious draw is the 1864 Saratoga Race Course. The Victorian grandstand holds 25,000, while the manicured back lawn offers massive shade trees, under which generations of families have spread their blankets or practiced the traditional "dibs on the table or bench" honor system move by enjoying breakfast at the track and leaving behind a cooler or newspaper to return to at race-time. The 142-year-old Travers Stakes, oldest thoroughbred race in the country, alone draws thousands of horse fans each August. Even newcomers to the sport will get caught up in the romance and history of the 350-acre park as costumed brass bands play and the gorgeous horses are paraded through the crowd on their way to the paddock in full dress. The Saratoga Battlefield of the Saratoga National Historic Park, Saratoga Spa State Park and the Moreau Lake State Park are renowned for their natural beauty, and these areas offer hiking, birdwatching, biking and horsetrails and swimming in historic natural spa pools. Museum buffs will appreciate the quality of niche exhibits showcasing dance, classic automobiles, and, of course, horseracing. With all of this, even those not moved by the bugle’s “Call to Post” will find something of interest in this picturesque area.
