Overview

Central Oregon's landscape is partly high desert, partly forest, and is punctuated with the high peaks of the Cascade Range, which have spewed enough basaltic lava to cover much of the region. Winter snows close the Cascade Lakes Highway past Mt. Bachelor, and there are many miles of cross-country ski trails in the area. (Winter here lasts through spring, and the road is usually closed well into June.)

Although Mt. Bachelor has no slopeside lodgings, it’s a very short drive from downtown Bend, a lively town with a wide range of accommodations and restaurants. Sunriver, a nearby resort community, is also a good base for Mt. Bachelor skiers and snowboarders.
