Englemann spruce trees blanket the pristine and often overlooked Trinity Alps: a wonderland for anglers, hikers, rafters, backpackers and artists. Gold prospectors descended upon these steep mountains in 1848. Many continued onward, but the intrepid nature lovers created rural villages that still dot the inner slopes of these mountains. In the 1940s, the inhabitants of this region aimed to turn Northern California into its own state and though they failed, the fervor of the local independence still lives strong. Today the small communities house devoted followers of a simpler life. Just west of Redding is Weaverville, an artist enclave guarded by the Joss House Taoist Temple. Anglers try their luck snagging trout or salmon in Lewiston, Douglas City, and Big Bar (which also draws kayakers). Coffee Creek and Hawkins Bar inspire rafters. And backpacking hikers will be in heaven. In winter, you can sled, ski, or even go dog-sledding. When the weather heats up, grab your camping gear, and head out to explore the alpine lakes. You cannot help but slow your pace as the Trinity River winds through the epic mountains, giving way to more birds and bears than cell phone chatting drivers.
